How to compress a PDF to 200KB

  1. Add your PDF. The target is already set to 200KB.
  2. Choose Strong for scans and photos, or Recommended to keep more detail.
  3. Compress, check that the new size is under 200KB, and download.

200KB is a strict limit

Few documents start out this small, so expect to use the Strong level. Text-only PDFs are often already near their minimum size because of embedded fonts, and image compression can't remove those.

If it won't go below 200KB

PDFWrangle shows the smallest size it reached and explains why. Then try, in this order:

  1. Switch the level to Strong.
  2. Turn on Convert pages to images. This rebuilds each page as a compressed image and gets scans much smaller, but text can no longer be selected or searched.
  3. Remove pages you don't need with Delete pages, or send only the required pages with Extract pages.
  4. Rescan at a lower resolution, such as 150 dpi, which gives a cleaner small file than squeezing a high-resolution scan.

Frequently asked questions

Which forms ask for PDFs under 200KB?

Small limits like this are common on online application and registration forms, such as exam sign-ups, scholarship and job applications and government services, where you upload certificates, mark sheets or ID scans. Always check the limit stated on the form itself, since it varies from one form to the next.

Will the PDF still be searchable?

Yes in standard mode. If you turn on Convert pages to images to reach 200KB, the text becomes part of the image and can't be selected or searched.

Will stamps and signatures still be visible?

Usually, but check the result. If they've become hard to read, use the Recommended level and remove pages instead.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device, so your files are never sent to a server.
